Sir Neville Marriner never conducted opera in Scotland, and his infrequent visits to the Edinburgh Festival with his own orchestra, the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, tended to be purely orchestral. To have him appearing as a guest with the RSNO in this kind of work is certainly a rare event to be treasured, and the team of youthful solosts was also likely to prove ideal.
