During his years running the Edinburgh Festival, Brian McMaster put on many concert performances of rare operas when he would probably not have been able to justify a fully-staged production. Many of them, as here, utilised the skills of the wonderful Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
In this case, the absence of a staged production of a relatively common work with such a fabulous cast tends more to arouse a sense of irritation. What a pity that resources did not permit three or four performances.
