The Edinburgh Review
The Scotsman (16 April) stated:
"Last night's performance, which was directed by Arthur Hammond, had the characteristic Carl Rosa crispness and precision. Mr Hubert Dunkerley, as the Jester, gave a remarkably impressive rendering of the character, alike as as actor and singer. The Duke and Gilda were two young newcomers, Mr Ivor John, a tenor of very decided promise, and Miss Mabel Baker, a charming soprano, the ease of whose work, considering the little experience which she has had so far, argues a great talent for opera...the opera was handsomely put upon the stage. As on the previous evening, there was occasion for admiring the lighting, which is always more than half the battle in scenic work. The colour in the last act was very rich and harmonious".
