"A few years ago, a mid-week performance of Trovatore would probably have meant empty seats in a theatre; last night the King's Theatre was crowded, and there were enthusiastic recalls at the end of each act...it was a powerful cast of principals for an opera which abounds in powerful situations..
Under Walter Susskind's direction, both chorus and orchestrarose to the occasion with great effect. With war conditions, a producer has to meke the most of limited resources. The various scenes in the opera were simple in their arrangement and subdued colouring, but were always impressive."
The 1944 visit to Scotland by Carl Rosa consisted of seven weeks, one in Aberdeen first, followed by two in Edinburgh. The Rosa then spent two weeks at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle before moving to Glasgow for four weeks.
Crowded houses were reported, further evidenced by the Wednesday matinees.
