Joseph Satariano had a long and successful career, singing worldwide. In Britain he was best known for performances of major baritone roles with Carl Rosa.
He made his debut at Sliema in 1918, joining the Valletta Opera until 1923. On moving to Italy he appeared in many major houses, also touring to Australia and South America. He worked in Buenos Aires with Fyodor Chaliapin, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa and Georges Thill.
His first British appearance came in 1938 and he toured during the war with ENSA before joining Carl Rosa. His roles included Rossini (Bartolo); Verdi (Rigoletto, Luna, Germont, Renato); Gounod (Valentin); Bizet (Escamillo); Offenbach (Dapertutto); Leoncavallo (Silvio, Tonio) and Mascagni (Alfio). He continued to sing until the age of 67.
