This was the only revival of David Leveaux’s 1995 production, a modern treatment, though not aggressively so. Some useful changes were introduced by new director Aidan Lang. Raymond Leppard returned from America to conduct the company after a gap of several years, and the cast contained a number of strikingly successful newcomers. Paul Whelan moved across from Figaro to the Count, with great success, his height being more obviously aristocratic. He was replaced by a startlingly good new Figaro in Christopher Purves, as a bull-headed and distinctly dangerous servant. Rebecca Caine was a mercurial Susanna, and Alice Coote made a debut with the main company as one of the best Cherubinos, several years after she first made her mark on tour in the Opera-go-Round staging of Maria Stuarda (and she wasn’t playing either queen!). Graham Stone was an unusually youthful Bartolo and Felicity Hammond made an immediate impression as Barbarina.
