Carl Rosa Opera - Figaro

'That Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro still holds a popular place in the repertory of the Carl Rosa Company was evident from the large audience that assembled in the King's Theatre to laugh once more over the courtly intrigues of the Count Almaviva and his amorous entourage, and to listen with delighted ear to the lovely music which has charmed so many generations of opera-goers.  The opera received, on the who;e, a satisfactory rendering, though one has seen performances of it which stirred up the audience to more enthusiasm.

'The cast, so far as the ladies were concerned,  was the same as when the opera was staged last March.  Miss Beatrice Miranda sang and acted with much daintiness as the maid Susanna.   The purity of her tone in all her numbers was very marked.  Miss Ina Hill was dignified as the Countess, and her fine voice was  heard to advantage in the well-known air of the third act - ''Vanished are ye bright hours'' - while Miss Doris Woodall made a piquant study of the roguish Cherubino, and rendered with excellent effect ''Ye who loves power.''

''Figaro on this occasion was entrusted to Mr Arthur Winckworth, who sang with his usual conscientious care the music of the part.  The rôle. however, in some respects, did not seem to sit too lightly on him.  The Count Almaviva of Mr Hebden Foster was satisfactory.  The chorus, which has but little to do throughout the opera,  gave a harmonious and impressive rendering to the closing choral number.  Mr Van Noorden condcted.

'To-night, for the first time in Edinburgh, Goldmark's Queen of Sheba will be produced.'

 

The Carl Rosa Scottish Tour - 1911

The tour consisted of five weeks at three locations, two at Edinburgh (King's), two Glasgow (Grand), and one Greenock (King's).

The thirteen operas in the repertoire were: Mozart (Marriage of Figaro);  Benedict (Lily of Killarney);  Balfe (Bohemian Girl);  Thomas (Mignon);  Wallace (Maritana);  Wagner (Tannhäuser,  Lohengrin);  Verdi (Trovatore);  Gounod (Faust);  Goldmark (Queen of Sheba);  Bizet (Carmen);  Leoncavallo (Pagliacci);  Mascagni (Cavalleria Rusticana).
