Two years before, James Conlon had brought his Italian orchestra from Florence to collaborate in a performance of the Verdi. Here he was appearing with the Rotterdam Philharmonic and it was a different Requiem, the DvoĆák.
Of the soloists, only Gwynne Howell was familiar, and he appeared, as here, more often in concert than true opera. The other three were making their only appearances in Scotland. Given their obvious quality, that was a pity.
