Walter Weller's background, spending years as a violinist, leader of the Vienna Philharmonic and in the pit at the Vienna State Opera, inevitably gave him an interest in conducting opera.
He had previously worked wth Scottish Opera and had also led opera concerts at the Edinburgh Festival. No surprise then that he should follow this up once he had his own orchestra in Scotland. This excellent Dutchman would eventually be followed by an equally notable Elektra.
This semi-staging directed by James Ross involved a cast largely familiar as names from recordings, but not having sung much in Scotland, or even in the UK.
The excellent American soprano Ruth Falcon came in as a late replacement for Mechtild Gessendorf.
