This was the last revival of David Pountney’s ground-breaking staging that began the five opera cycle built up in collaboration with Welsh National Opera.

Pauline Tinsley returned, having sung every performance since the production was new. She was as dramatic as ever, though perhaps not quite as spontaneous as she had been.  Anne Williams-King gave a moving performance, though, again, perhaps not as intense as her predecessors.

Where this revival gained particular distinction was with the men. Graham Clark had not sung with the company for many years, and was now working all over the world, especially at Bayreuth and the New York Met.  Alberto Remedios, now a company regular, was singing Laca for the first time, and made it seem a natural role for him.

Roderick Brydon took a more lyrical approach than previous conductors, and Robert Dean, conducting a single performance in Glasgow, produced a tremendous sense of urgency in the final scene, bringing the evening to a shattering climax.

 

Scottish Opera's Season -1989/90

The 1989/90 season of Scottish Opera included new productions of Salome,  La forza del destino, Così fan tutte,  The Merry Widow, The Threepenny Opera and Duke Bluebeard's Castle.  The revivals were Oedipux Rex (partnering Bluebeard),  Madam Butterfly,  Die Fledermaus and Jenůfa.  There was an Opera-Go-Round tour of Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana (in that order).
