Mahler's 2nd Symphony is one of those big pieces that is mounted by the Festival with some regularity, though it should only be done when the participants available are of special eminence. There is no denying that this team is quite special. The big Mahler symphonies were a Bernstein speciality, and these performances were part of a short tour that took in a completely different venue in Ely Cathedral, where it was filmed for TV. A studio recording was also made.

Needless to say, the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and soloists Armstrong and Baker all make a massive contribution.
