Performing Mozart's unfinished C minor Mass was great evidence of continuing enterprise on the part of the Dundee Choral Union. However that was not all on this occasion. The concert began with Haydn's completely unknown Te Deum, followed by Beethoven's Choral Fantasia.
This completely unusual programme combination was clearly enough to attract Jennifer Smith, a soprano with a thriving international career, to visit Dundee - and to return a couple of years later for Messiah. Harry Nicoll was also a busy performer, generally working down south. He was a frequent performer in character parts at Covent Garden, but was at this time appearing with Scottish Opera.
