If Christopher Bell was allowed his choice of choral masterpieces to work on at his last Festival in charge of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus - and let's hope he was - then it is hardly surprising if he included this wonderful, thoroughly bracing choral symphony. The two soloists were also ideally cast.
Not a full evening in the concert hall, there is always a worry over what to use as a supplement. Here the 90th anniversary of the Scottish (but long USA-resident) composer Thea Musgrave was celebrated, with an unknown work Turbulent Landscapes. Only two of her many operas have been staged in Scotland, and it would have been nice to have another one, but at least the occasion was marked.
