The Edinburgh Choral Union at this time were lucky to be able to call on the services of Professor Tovey, the Edinburgh-based Beethoven authority, to guide them here. Note also the presence of the baritone Clive Carey. In later years he taught several notable British singers including David Ward.
The Beethoven masterpiece was clearly not considered to be a full evening programme, and proceedings began with two other Beethoven works. These were the short cantata Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and an arrangement for string orchestra of the Grosse Fuge in B flat, op133. These were conducted by a familiar colleague of Tovey's, Mr Greenhouse Allt.
