This concert was initially scheduled to be conducted by Walter Weller. As he was ill, it was fortunate that Alexander Lazarev was available to step in, It was an interesting programme, beginning with the Caplet orchestration of Debussy's Children's Corner. After that came the Mahler song cycle Kindertotenlieder. The young Russian mezzo was therefore available to appear in the single aria allotted to her in the Prokofiev cantata. This was an enterprising choice of work for the RSNO Chorus to sing on a rare excursion beyond the central belt.
