The nineties was a decade when the RSNO took the 'Choral' beyond the central belt on an amazing three occasions. It hadn't happened before, nor indeed since. Very odd.
This was a most enjoyable Saturday night Prom in Dundee. An all-Beethoven programme featured leader Edwin Paling as soloist in the 2nd Romance in F, op50. This was sandwiched between two overtures - Prometheus and Egmont.
The soloists were still relatively little-known in Scotland. Perhaps best known was Neal Davies. He had won the song prize in Cardiff in 1991 and had already made his Edinburgh Festival debut. This saw the launch of a long run of appearances, especially at the Edinburgh Festival, over the next thirty years or so.
Tenor Timothy Robinson was making his Scottish debut. He soon joined the Royal Opera, coming back to the Edinburgh Festival with them. His next visit to Dundee came in 2002, when he sang again in the Caird Hall. However this was in a different situation, without a paying audience. Sir Charles Mackerras had chosen the tenor for his recording of the Mozart Requiem with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, using a generally lightweight approach. Sir Charles had chosen, once again, to make the recording in Dundee, remaining very fond of the hall, though his appearances there were generally without an audience.
