The RSNO's traditional New Year performance of Messiah is here safe in the very Handelian hands of Nicholas McGegan. Long associated with the composer through his directorships in Germany and California, his appearances in Scotland had been dealing with music by other composers, particularly, with Scottish Opera, a succession of the masterpieces by Mozart. Mind you, he would be bringing his Göttingen company's memorable production of Handel's Admeto to the 2009 Edinburgh Festival, so that particular gap would soon be filled.

The solo quartet is also of the expected high standard, though only Roderick Williams has appeared with any frequency in Scotland, doing recital work (generally with accompanist Iain Burnside) as well as operas and choral pieces.
