The Philharmonia were almost an orchestra in residence at the 1980 Festival, with both chief Riccardo Muti and guest Andrew Davis conducting. Davis was also the chief conductor in Toronto, so it was no surprise that his excellent chorus should come on tour (the Toronto orchestra came another time, in 1986).
The Delius sea pictures were given an excellent interpretation as the centrepiece of a concert that began with Tippett's Ritual Dances from The Midsummer Marriage and ended with Dvořák's 8th Symphony.
