A Mass of Life is a real rarity, hardly ever performed despite page after page of inspiring music. The text may be obscure, except for Nietzsche enthusiasts, but that is hardly a reason for ignoring the music. Sir Charles, when in charge at Welsh National Opera did stage A Village Romeo and Juliet and this was an opportunity for him to explore a contemporary piece on an even larger scale.
A better quartet of soloists could hardly have been gathered in the Usher Hall.
