The Brahms Reuiem is a lovely piece that is sometimes difficult to perform well. It is essential to use a performance space that is not over-reverberant. If the acoustic is too generous, textures can become muddied. The City Hall does have an excellent, clear acoustic, and the choir and orchestra seemed to get through it with reater clarity than a church might have provided.
The orchestra presented a series of Brahms concerts through the 2015/16 season, with all four symphonies being performed and recorded. Robin Ticciati steered the Requiem with a light hand and the two soloists were ideally cast.
While occasionally the Requiem can make for an evening on its own, most often it is preceded by a companion work. In this case, one of Haydn's wonderfully varied London symphonies, No102, began the evening in excellent fashion.
Details of Edinburgh concert to be confirmed, Details are from the season brochure for Glasgow.
