This Holst double bill was a highly imaginative example of the BNOC's programming.  Savitri, in the first part of the evening, and The Perfect Fool, could hardly be more different.

 

Edinburgh in Autumn

The Scotsman of Saturday, ! December (p9) reviewed the previous evening's Gustav Holst double bill of Savitri and The Perfect Fool:

'Savitri discards the stock devices of opera; The Perfect Fool pokes fun at them.  There is a magic potion, prepared by  a wizard, but of which the wrong person partakes, with the result that a Princess falls in love with the village idiot; there is a Troubadour, who has wandered out of Italian opera, bringing the characteristic music of the rôle with him, but labouring under an inability to sing it properly; and a Wagnerian aspirant to the hand of the Princess.  The Wagnerian wooer, however, is rendered ineffective by the noisiness of the accompaniment with which he is provided.

'It is all very good fun, and Mr William Michael as the baffled Wizard, Mr Raymond Ellis as the Fool, who remains supremely indifferent to his magical powers,  Miss Edna Thornton as the mother of the Fool,  Miss Gertrude Johnson as the Princess;  Mr Browning Mummery as a Troubadour in the style of Verdi;  Mr Frederic Collier as the Wagnerian wooer,  and Mr Sydney Russell as a Peasant;  all proved hemselves excellent comedians.

'Mr Holst has provided some vivacious ballet-music, and the Misses Eily Gerald, Olive Joyner, and Lenore Leslie danced beautifully.  There is an amazing cleverness in the orchestration of both works, and Mr Leslie Heward conducted them admirably.'

 

BNOC in Scotland - 1923 (Spring & Autumn)

The company's Spring visit lasted five weeks - two in Edinburgh (King's Theatre) and three in Glasgow (at the Coliseum, as the Theatre Royal was not available).

Returning in the autumn, the visit again lasted five weeks - four in Glasgow (this time at the Theatre Royal) and one in Edinburgh (King's Theatre).

The 29 operas performed were Bach (Phoebus and Pan);  Mozart (Seraglio,  Marriage of Figaro,  Magic Flute);  Wagner (Tannhäuser,  Mastersingers,  Rhinegold,  Valkyrie,  Siegfried,  Twilight of the Gods);  Verdi (Trovatore, Aïda,  Otello);  Gounod (Faust);  Bizet (Carmen);  Saint-Saëns (Samson and Delilah);  Leoncavallo (Pagliacci);  Puccini (Bohème,  Tosca,  Madam Butterfly,  Gianni Schicchi);  Mascagni (Cavalleria Rusticana);  Humperdinck (Hansel and Gretel);  Debussy (Pelléas and Mélisande);  Charpentier (Louise);  Smyth (Boatswain's Mate,  Fête Galante);  Holst (Savitri,  Perfect Fool).
