This was a revival of the first full-length Gilbert and Sullivan entertainment. It had not been performed for many years and this was an entirely new staging. It was deemed to be a complete success, well worthy of inclusion in the D'Oyly Carte company's touring repertoire.
On this occasion, like Pinafore and Pirates in later seasons, it was paired with a curtain-raiser in the delightful form of Trial By Jury.
