Mozart's great comedy has been performed at the Festival several times in recent years, sometimes with mixed results. This concert performance was outstanding, led by Maxim Emelyanychev and his Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He was right at the heart of a lively interpretation, directing from the fortepiano. He had earlier joined with some of the orchestra's section principals in a Queen's Hall concert - the 'Kegelstadt' trio and K414 piano concerto, with the concerto doing a Haydn Fantasy between them.
The only familiar soloist was Christopher Maltman, returning to Mozartian territory after his recent Wagnerian exertions. Golda Schultz made a notable Festival appearance with a recital last year and has just made a well-received Covent Garden debut, also as Fiordiligi. With luck she will become a regular visitor.
