The RSNO usually tries to end its season with something of a blockbuster, so Beethoven's 9th may nowadays seem quite small scale. However there is nothing so well calculated to lift the spirits. And the orchestra has chosen to give the finale's 'Ode to Joy' title to the entire evening.
The concert begins with good, solidly Scottish music, in the form of Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and Sir James MacMillan's Three Scottish Songs.
The orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor is in charge, with an excellent quartet of soloists, three familiar and a new bass.
