Thaïs 2011Edinburgh International Festival

Read more about the opera Thaïs

Thaïs has not been performed in Britain in decades, and quite possibly never in Scotland. What seems even more surprising is the fact that in all its sixty-odd years, only one opera by Massenet had ever been performed at the Edinburgh Festival before (a Belgrade staging of Don Quichotte in 1962). Sir Andrew Davis is now an infrequent visitor to Scotland, and his appearances in any form of opera almost unknown - Oedipus Rex with his Toronto Orchestra is the only instance we can find.

The performance was very successful, dominated, as it should be, by the interpretations of the central roles by Erin Wall and Quinn Kelsey. Such an attractive work with this cast might have been expected to attract a bigger audience.
