This revival was musically very secure, with a quartet of excellent singers in the leading roles. Peter Watson continued the process begun in 1996 of making Tim Hatley's promising designs from 1992 the basis for an atmospheric staging. Richard Armstrong showed his willingness to rethink from scratch, even in an opera he had been conducting for years, and took the decision to stick to Verdi's score and remove the interpolated high notes that spurious traditions had inserted - particularly at the end of Manrico's "Di quella pira".
