A long term member of the Bolshoy company in Moscow, Maxim Mikhailov came to Scotland in 1990, for Glasgow's year as European Capital of Culture, performing both in Glasgow and at the Edinburgh International Festival. He was still with the Bolshoy when they returned to Edinburgh the following year, having left Moscow at dawn, as the tanks rolled in for what turned out to be an unsuccessful military coup attempt.
