Mathilde Bauermeister had an extensive career generally singing character roles rather than the major starring parts. Her Covent Garden appearances lasted nearly forty years, and she also worked extensively with Mapleson and for a while at the New York Met.
She studied in London at the Royal Academy of Music with the support of Therese Tietjens, and made her first appearance in 1866 at Dublin. Her Covent Garden debut in 1868 was as Siébel in Faust. Her repertoire extended to nearly 100 parts covering a wide range. These included Ännchen in Der Freischütz, Magdalene in Die Meistersinger and Mamma Lucia in Cavalleria Rusticana. She worked at Covent Garden every season between 1885 and her retirement in 1905. She made 16 trips to the USA, either with Mapleson's company or as a member of the company at the Met.
