Leo Sheffield joined the D’Oyly Carte company in 1906, and from 1907 sang principal roles including Luiz, Private Willis, Samuel, Cholmondley, and Sergeant Meryll. From 1910 he worked in other shows as well, returning frequently, and spending most of his time singing the ‘Pooh-Bah roles’. In 1911 and 1913 he came to Scotland in the cast of Oscar Straus's operetta The Chocolate Soldier. For a time towards the end of World War II he was with the BBC Drama Repertory Company. He recorded several roles including Sergeant of Police (1929).
