This was the last occasion on which Anthony Besch worked with Scottish Opera before his death, though there was no discernible falling off in his attention to detail. From 1963 to 1980 he was a frequent visitor, always thinking things out afresh. He produced a wide range of work, from operetta to new pieces, though particularly associated with Britten, Mozart, Strauss and Verdi's Otello, which, like this Tosca, he returned to revive on many occasions.
This run, brilliantly led by Richard Farnes, who worked often with the company in those days, featured the company debuts of David Rendall, Terje Stensvold, and leading Bolshoi soprano Nina Rautio.
