This enterprising production was not the most visually exciting staging of Tosca ever seen, but within the confines of the Perth theatre it worked surprisingly well. The set was a basic black box, and any visual variety was supplied by lighting and effective groupings. Julie Unwin and Michael Bracegirdle gave excellent readings of the lead roles, and the whole evening was carefully controlled by Noel Davies, who had decades of experience conducting much of the standard operatic repertoire at the Coliseum.
