A superb cast gathered for a single concert performance of this glorious masterpiece which continued the consistently fine series of late recordings of Mozart made by Sir Charles Mackerras with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Lisa Milne's ideal Ilia was familiar from Scottish Opera's recent staging. Ian Bostridge produced the flexibility and (perhaps more surprisingly) the power for the title role. The Idamante of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson was also rather special. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, a wonderful interpreter of the title role in years gone by, made Arbace a more important figure that he usually seems.
