Read more about the opera Rigoletto

Scottish Opera's subscription season 1984-85 consisted of nine operas, including six new productions, one of which was a world premiere. They began with Cavalli's Orion, which received its UK premiere at the Edinburgh Festival before joining the season's repertoire. The other works given were Fidelio (revival), Rigoletto (revival), Capriccio, Bartered Bride (revival), Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Giovanni, Orlando and Hedda Gabler (Edward Harper world premiere).

David Alden’s 1979 production came back for a final run. It featured in the title role John Rawnsley, who had created the role in Jonathan Miller’s legendary New York mafioso production for ENO at the London Coliseum a few seasons before. He now sang in Italian and made what was to be his only appearance with Scottish Opera. By this time, Alden's staging had rather lost its sharpness - none of the singers in major roles had experienced the production in its early days, but it still came over as a perfectly sound revival.

One unsuspected cast change is the professional debut of a local soprano, Rosa Mannion, at a performance in Liverpool.
