Born Cheshire.
English bass.
Norman White spent twenty years with Scottish Opera, during which he became the first singer to give 1000 performances with the company.
White studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music with Frederick Cox, then with Hans Hotter in Munich.
Joining Scottish Opera in 1967, White went on to appear in over fifty roles. He toured many times with Opera For All as well as with the main company. There can be few parts for a doctor or notary that he did not at some point perform, and must have given dozens of performances as Doctor Grenvil in La traviata alone.
Offstage, he was the first manager of the Friends of Scottish Opera, travelling huge distances to organize support groups around the country.
White also lectured widely on operatic history, using an encyclopaedic knowledge combined with a massive range of rare vintage recordings. Many of these were subsequently transferred and made available on CD.
