The cast for Tannhäuser is from our copy of the programme for Friday, 22 March. The Saturday performances were Die Fledermaus at the matinee and Faust in the evening.
The Welsh bass Howell Glynne had a long and notable career with Sadler's Wells and Covent Garden, and even sang with Scottish Opera in 1963. Here he sings the Landgrave, while in the 1938 performance he sings the less prominent role of Reinmar - clearly an unselfish 'company man'.
The Scotsman review (23 March) of the performance in Edinburgh credited in particular the performance of John Wright as Tannhauser 'whose singing and acting were cast in the grand style'.
An excerpt from the Edinburgh performance was broadcast live on the Scottish programme.
