By 1999 the Edinburgh Festival's neglect of one of the greatest elements of British music, Handel's oratorios, remained mystifying. At last on this occasion a superb cast was assembled and one of these masterworks, hardly known in Scotland, was given a prominent place in the opening concert.
The spectacular cast gave rare opportunities to hear Bryn Terfel and David Daniels, in particular, and extended to Toby Spence, Neil Jenkins and Neal Davies in the shorter roles.
