Damnation de Faust 1939Dundee Amateur Choral Union

Read more about the opera Damnation of Faust

This was the final Choral Union concert before the outbreak of war, and a distinctly grander affair in terms of numbers than the choir managed subsequently. It also marked the last concert conducted by Charles Cowe after thirty years in charge.

The choir itself numbered three hundred adults, to which were added, for the occasion, two hundred girls from Harris and Morgan Academies. The soloists were led by Isobel Baillie, not usually an opera performer (neither was Frank Titterton). The Welsh baritone Redvers Llewellyn definitely was a creature of the operatic stage.
