Colin Graham mounted a handsome and powerful production of this haunting masterpiece, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the establishment of Scottish Opera.  George Shirley had already played Pelléas in the Covent Garden production conducted by Boulez (and recorded).  John Shirley-Quirk had sung Arkel with the company in 1962 as well as the Shepherd and Doctor at Glyndebourne. and now returned as Golaud.

Joseph Rouleau was the only principal of that 1962 cast to return.

Jeanette Pilou was making her highly successful British debut, though she did not return.
