By 1890, Elijah was one of the most frequently performed works in the choral repertoire. The title role here is taken by one of the leading basses of the time, at least in oratorio, the Scot Andrew Black. However his fame was far outstripped by that of the soprano. Still only in her early thirties, she was already billed as Madame Nordica. Her New York Met debut came the following year, and she was the first American singer to perform at Bayreuth, in 1894.
