Through the previous decade, Sir Charles had made recordings of the greatest Mozart operas with the SCO, usually with parallel concert performances at the Festival. This was the last one, and for the most part the standard was maintained. The orchestra was superb, with beautiful contributions from clarinet and basset horn. Quite why the subsequent performance of Zaide was not recorded remains a mystery.
