Martha is a thoroughly attractive opera that has almost disappeared from the modern repertoire. It is a light comedy, perhaps a touch sentimental, and certainly with no deep hidden message. It is good fun, with lots of tunes, and is an excellent piece for somewhere like Haddo, who so far have offered it twice.
On this occasion, a different translation by Tom Boyd was used, along with the orchestral reduction by Tony Burke - even so, there were still twenty-six players in the band.
