These were excellent performances conducted by Wilfried Boettcher, a regular guest with the SCO for several seasons.
On this occasion the German text was used, though the original group of soloists was Anglophone. One advantage of this was that when the original tenor, American Vinson Cole, a regular with Karajan at Salzburg and Berlin, withdrew, it was possible to fly in a replacement star specialist tenor from Germany. Werner Hollweg only appeared at Covent Garden for one run of performances, though he made three visits to the Edinburgh Festival. However these appearances in The Creation were his only performances in Aberdeen and Glasgow.
