Mendelssohn's great dramatic oratorio had become unfashionable, and by 1988 had not been performed by the Dundee Choral Union for over forty years.
By this time Donald Maxwell's career was based in Wales and developing internationally. There was a significant gap in his operatic appearances in Scotland, but he was able to come home regularly for concert work. Marie Slorach was also singing more down south by this time, though she still had some major roles with Scottish Opera to come.
