This performance of Gerontius, with the firm backing of the Scottish Orchestra, has an interesting cast of soloists. The noted contralto Margaret Balfour concentrated on concert work throughout her career. By contrast, Frank Mullings was renowned as one of the most histrionic of opera performers, so the restrictions deriving from the concert platform may have seemed to take him outside his natural environment. The great baritone Roy Henderson was here at the start of his career, and had not yet broken through in opera. But he would enjoy a long and successful time both as singer and teacher.
