Fourteen years had passed since the previous performance of Elijah by the Choral, but Andrew Black was still in excellent form. It was only a few months since his appearance in the premiere of Elgar's Apostles in Birmingham. The other soloists were highly reputable, even if the soprano was not quite of the stature of the great Nordica from 1890.
On this occasion, the Scottish Orchestra was not brought through from Glasgow. The 'Full Orchestral Accompaniment' of thirty-three players was therefore most likely to be assembled from the freelance pools of Edinburgh and London.
