The spring tour of this production was notable (in Glasgow and Edinburgh) for the only appearances in Scotland of the American mezzo Rosalind Elias, a long-standing star of the Metropolitan.  She justified her visit, presenting a delightful characterization.  Opera magazine was particularly enthusiastic about her singing - “her warm, rich, sensuous voice and very musical phrasing were a constant joy”.

North of the central belt, Cinderella was sung by the Canadian Josephte Clément,.  She had been a company member for several seasons and had recently sung the role on extensive Opera For All tours.   She was an impressive coloratura contralto who could also take on dramatic soprano roles.

However in some respects the star of the show was still Ian Wallace, whose portrayal of Don Magnifico was a classic, meticulously treading the tightrope between buffoonery and meanness.

Apart from Cinderella, the spring season included an excellent revival of Don Giovanni. The two new productions were also of a notably high standard, The Turn of the Screw and Fidelio.

Between visits to Aberdeen and Perth the company travelled to Newcastle, doing another two performances – dates to be confirmed.
