It was over twenty years since the Carl Rosa had last staged Romeo, but this cast seems quite strong, especially with young Parry Jones as Romeo and William Anderson as the Friar. Full of excellent things, iIt is hard to understand why the opera is so much less popular than Faust.
The conductor, Orry Corjeag, was a native of the Isle of Man, noted both as a violinist and composer. He also spent some time as leader of the Carl Rosa orchestra. However during this tour the leader was Madame Nettie Carpenter - as in more everyday fields, musical life had been transformed during the war, with women given (temporary) positions of great prominence.
The Glasgow Verdict
The Glasgow Herald: Monday, 8 December 1919
'On Saturday afternoon Gounod's Romeo and Juliet was performed, with a very sweet-voiced appealing heroine in Miss Gladys Seagar, an excellent Romeo in Mr Parry Jones, and a satisfactory Friar Lawrence in Mr William Anderson. If less dintinguished, singers in the other parts were perfectly safe. Mr Orry Corjeag conducted.'
