The Edinburgh performance was reviewed in the Scotsman (29 March). "Last night Hubert Dunkerley gave a powerful impersonation of the Jester, an object of hatred to the victims of his brutal humour, but with one streak of tenderness in his composition, his tenderness towards his daughter. The role is one that calls for a good actor and a dramatic singer. Mr Dunkerley created a great impression in both respects. The Gilda of Luella Paikin was an effective foil to the half-crazed jester.'
South African prima donna Rose Alper took over the role of Gilda for the Glasgow performance.
Carl Rosa Opera's Scottish visit in 1938 consisted of one week in Edinburgh, followed by two weeks in Glasgow.
