A very short review was given in the Edinburgh Evening News (4 March).

"The Carl Rosa Opera Company brought their very successful season at the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh to a close on Saturday evening by an admirable performance of Il trovatore in which Mr Hughes Macklin and Miss Beatrice Miranda carried off the chief honours.  Both were recalled again and again by a most enthusiastic audience."

Of a further performance, the reviewer in the Daily Record (11 Mar) said "In the evening Il trovatore was admirably performed, with Miss Phyllis Lansdell (a new Leonora, who possesses a beautiful voice, has fine histrionic gifts and was enthusiastically received), Miss Phyllis Archibald, Mr James Pursail and Mr Hughes Macklin in the principal roles."
