German Requiem 2008Edinburgh International Festival

Read more about the opera Deutsches Requiem

Brahms' wonderful Requiem can, in the wrong hands, seem heavy, with the complex vocal writing in the fugues and ensembles sounding muddy. No danger of that here, with all the lines crystal clear.

Sometimes it makes a complete evening, but there are appropriate companions that can be found. Gardiner was particularly thoughtful, with a little-known piece of mournful Brahms, Begräbnisgesang. Space was also found for an earlier work, the Musikalische Exequien by Heinrich Schütz.
